Trend Spotting

I had an unexpected day to myself the other week. I did something that I should be doing a lot more often and hopped onto the underground and spent the day sauntering around shops and visiting art galleries!  Here are some of the lovely things that caught my attention in Heal's, Tottenham Court Road....

The tray is by Imogen Heath  and I found it here in Heal's with what I think is a really exciting and interesting colour palette.  The orange and yellow are almost neon, giving the refreshing spring shades a bit of an edge.  I love too that the softer colours are grounded with a smattering of deep low tones.

I was really drawn to these cushions which really surprises me because they are so different to my own style but I love the reference to photography, cartography and images that date well back. There is nothing pretty and feminine about they flowers, birds and butterflies - they have been really vamped up with the use of black, shadows and near silhouettes.

There is a colour pallet for everyone in the shops at the moment though - here the yellows and oranges have been teamed with a blue slate-grey and black.  If the Imogen Heath design was suggestive of dawn, the colours in the design above are dusk. And these more earthy tones (never my favourite!) have been carried across soft furnishings throughout the stores - beneath is a shot from Habitat.  I love the marbled cushions!

Back in Heal's - I spotted these gorgeous designs by marimekko.

I then got stuck in the lighting department!  Heal's have a genius idea of pic and mix lighting - truly like being in a candy shop - where you choose your exposed cord, light fitting and filament light bulb and piece it together at home.
